Managing North Castle's Invasive Vines, Shrubs & Weeds
Why It Matters (Overview)
Invasive vines and shrubs may look harmless, but they're spreading quickly and silently choking North Castle's landscapes. Originally brought here for gardens and erosion control, these plants now smother trees, crowd out native species, damage wetlands that filter our water and strip away the natural beauty that defines our town.
The Impact
Environmental Damage: They kill trees, reduce biodiversity, destroy animal habitats, and make us more vulnerable to storm damage.
Economic Cost: Town resources are diverted from "Quality-of-Life programs to clearing downed trees and overgrown areas. Property maintenance costs increase and property values decrease.
No Simple Cure: Herbicides and research offer limited help. Right now, there's no permanent fix.
What Works
The only proven method is hands-on-removal - cutting vines, pulling roots, and replanting with native species. Every vine cut helps restore our ecosystems, protect wildlife, and preserve the character of our community.
